This is critical. Bury the welded top casing in dry sand, vermiculite, or a heat-controlled oven. Allow it to cool at a rate of no more than 50°F per hour. If it cools too fast, the weld will crack right next to the base metal.

Using nickel rods, weld 1-inch beads at a time. Immediately after each bead, peen the weld with a ball-peen hammer (light, rapid taps) to relieve stress. Do not let the part cool naturally between passes; maintain preheat. juki pm1 crack top

Cast iron is stubborn. Preheat the entire top casing to 500-600°F (260-315°C) using a propane rosebud torch. Do this slowly. Uneven heat creates new cracks. Use a temperature stick to verify. If it cools too fast, the weld will

If you are currently staring at a hairline fracture on your top casing: Stop using the machine immediately. Unbolt it from the table. Assess whether welding or replacement is your path forward. And remember—in the world of industrial sewing, your machine’s foundation is everything. A cracked top means cracked profits, skipped stitches, and endless frustration.

After cooling, use a carbide burr and then fine files to bring the surface back to flat. The needle bar bushing bore must be perfectly perpendicular to the hook axis. Check with a dial indicator. If the weld warped the bore, you will need a line-boring machine (often more expensive than a new top casing).

Drill a tiny 1.5mm hole at each end of the crack. This “stop hole” prevents the crack from propagating further during welding. Then, use a die grinder to carve a “V” groove along the entire length of the crack—about 60% of the material depth.
