The milk was just the excuse. They paid £1.50 for the milk, but really they paid £1.50 for the sound of the float at 4:30 AM. It meant the world hadn’t ended overnight.

But it was scary. People were afraid of the milk. They’d leave a bucket of bleach water to wash the bottles in. They’d wear masks to open the door. I wasn’t a friendly ghost anymore; I was a potential vector. Interview With A Milkman -1996- -2021-

But here’s the thing they don’t tell you about 1996. People still had guilt. They would cancel to your face. They’d leave an envelope with a quid in it and a note saying, “I feel terrible.” That doesn’t happen anymore. Now, they just block your number. The milk was just the excuse
