Few animated films capture the ethereal blend of wartime melancholy, whimsical romance, and anti-industrial allegory quite like Hayao Miyazaki’s 2004 masterpiece, Howl’s Moving Castle . Based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones, the film follows Sophie Hatter, a timid hat-maker cursed into an old woman’s body, and her journey through a magical war-torn kingdom inside the rickety, steam-powered castle of the vain yet gentle wizard Howl.
Miyazaki spent years hand-drawing the shifting gears of that magical castle, the soot sprites, and the fields of wildflowers. Does that artistry deserve to be watched in a 720p window surrounded by ads for sketchy VPNs?
