Heading into Episode 21, the "MSV" is triggered by a single, mundane object: a letter from the bank regarding Georgie’s co-signature on a loan for a friend from his "Meemaw’s illegal casino" days. The episode opens with a flashback—rare for this series. We see a 19-year-old Mandy, before she met Georgie, sitting in a church in Wichita Falls. She is crying after a disastrous date with an older man. She whispers a vow to God: "I will never settle for a boy who doesn't know who he is. If I get married, it will be to a man with a steady path. No detours."

Georgie moves into the garage of the Cooper house (now occupied only by Mary, who has become a ghost of her former self). As he unpacks a single duffel bag, he looks at a photo of him and Mandy at the hospital when Cece was born.
