200W max. Do not exceed 12A on the 12V rail if other rails are heavily loaded. Section 5: Common Problems & Troubleshooting the "Pinout 2" Problem 1: PSU does not turn on when shorting Green to Black on the main 20-pin. Solution: The D220P-01 ignores the main connector’s PS_ON# (Pin 14 is empty). You must use the Green wire on the secondary 6-pin connector. Problem 2: Fan spins for 1 second then stops. No output. Solution: This is often a sign of overcurrent protection or missing +5VSB load. Ensure your jumper is secure. Also check if any output rail is shorted. The D220P-01 uses "latching" overvoltage/overcurrent protection – you must unplug AC for 30 seconds to reset. Problem 3: Measuring +5VSB on purple wire but PW-OK stays low (0V) when PSU is on. Solution: PW-OK only goes high after the main rails (+3.3, +5, +12) stabilize (100–500ms). If PW-OK remains low, the PSU has a fault (bad capacitor or overload). Recap: The D220P-01 is notorious for bulging 1000µF, 16V capacitors on the secondary side after 10+ years. Problem 4: Finding the correct pin numbering on the 6-pin connector. Solution: Hold the connector so the wire exit is facing you and the locking ramp is on top. The pins are arranged as: | Pin | Signal | Wire Color |

Article last verified with actual D220P-01 hardware and Agilent multimeter. Wire colors and pin functions confirmed as of 2025. Do not exceed 12A on the 12V rail

The control connector wiring varies – but the principles above (identify Purple, Green, Gray) apply across most Dell proprietary units from 2002–2008.
