This is my confession. I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a Production Sound Mixer for adult cinema. I went to film school thinking I’d be recording dialogue for indie dramas about sad people in coffee shops. But the industry is brutal. After graduation, I was brewing espresso for a living.

A friend of a friend knew someone at JoyBear Pictures. The pitch was simple: “It’s a gig. We need someone who doesn’t get flustered, knows a Deva recorder from a Zoom, and won’t accidentally unplug the lavaliers.”

I took the job.

I take those WAV files back to my small, sad apartment and I spend 10 hours cleaning them in Pro Tools. I remove the air conditioner rumble. I use RX spectral repair to erase the sound of a car honking two blocks away. I balance the loud sounds and the quiet sounds so the final mix doesn't blow your speakers out.

Lav mics (the little ones clipped to clothing) are great, but in this genre, "clothing" is often optional or non-existent. You can’t clip a mic to a bare shoulder. It looks like a spider. So, the boom becomes king. That means I am standing three feet away from the action, holding a 12-foot pole, with the mic pointed at the performers’ mouths (and sometimes lower, depending on the shot), praying I don’t cast a shadow. It becomes technical. Mechanical. Beautiful, even—but in a technical way.

JoyBear Pictures pays union rates. They respect the crew. The directors are obsessive about quality. And frankly, I’ve never learned more about microphone technique in my life. You want to learn how to boom? Try booming a moving target on a memory foam mattress without making a shadow. It’s a sport.
