The new Roman governor, Gratus, rides through the streets of Jerusalem. The crowd is hostile. From the roof of the Hur palace, Judah’s sister, Tirzah, watches the procession. She is young and foolish—excited by the pageantry. When Gratus passes, a loose tile from the roof (dislodged by Tirzah’s nervous weight) falls onto the street below.
