During a multinational naval exercise off the coast of Hawaii, the USS John Paul Jones—led by Lieutenant Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch)—encounters an alien species that arrives via a communications array. The aliens quickly establish a force field isolating the Hawaiian Islands from the rest of the world.
