Archive of Our Own (AO3) is the beating heart of modern fan fiction. Run by the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), it hosts millions of works across thousands of fandoms. It is free, non-commercial, and fiercely defended by its user base.

A (or mirror site) is an exact copy of a website hosted on a different server or domain. If the main site (archiveofourown.org) goes offline due to traffic spikes, DDoS attacks, or server maintenance, a mirror site allows users to read content, post works, or browse tags on a backup server. But even the best servers have bad days
The OTW is a small team of volunteers. Running one massive archive is expensive enough; running a fully synchronized public mirror would double their infrastructure costs. However, there are two official exceptions: During major maintenance or DDoS attacks, the OTW sometimes spins up a read-only mirror . This allows users to read works but not post, edit, or leave kudos. The URL for this mirror changes from event to event, but it is always announced first on the AO3_Status Twitter (X) account and the OTW’s Tumblr . 2. The "AO3.org" vs "Archiveofourown.org" Redundancy Technically, AO3.org and archiveofourown.org point to the same server cluster. However, the OTW uses a Content Delivery Network (CDN) – Cloudflare. When you can't reach one domain, trying the other rarely helps because the backend is identical. This is not a mirror.
